SRSG welcomes the second meeting of Joint Security Committee

in Mogadishu

Nairobi, 12 August 2009 – The UN Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, has welcomed the convening of the Joint Security Committee held in Mogadishu as continuing efforts towards reforming and improving security in Somalia.

This is the second meeting to be held by the Joint Security Committee (JSC) in Mogadishu. It was attended by its regular members, both Somalis and their international partners (African Union, League of Arab States, European Union/European Commission, United Nations).

Today’s meeting focused on a number of items including a briefing on recent security developments, the establishment of technical working groups and other issues and activities in support of Somali security sector institutions. The outcome of the meeting was expected to achieve a number of practical steps towards better organizing and strengthening the Somali security sector, particularly its reorganizing and restructuring.

In accordance with the Djibouti Agreement and its terms of reference, the JSC is responsible for coordinating the work of the Government and its international partners to establish the necessary and appropriate mechanisms for security and stability in Somalia.

The Committee will meet on a regular basis and will eventually cover other areas of security sector reform and the establishment of the rule of law.
