THE EXPORT OF TOXIC WASTES FROM
WESTERN COUNTRIES TO AFRICA
THE CASE OF SOMALIA
Utrecht, Saturday 4th June 2005. Time 13.30 until 16.30
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),
Somalia had since 1980s been receiving countless shipments of
illegal nuclear and toxic waste dumped along the coastline. On the
occasion of the World Environment Day, 5th June 2005, the Somali
Center for Development Research, in collaboration with African Sky,
is organizing a seminar about the current acute environmental
problems in Somalia. In particular, we will be looking at the issues
around the illegal hazardous and toxic wastes exported from the rich
western countries and subsequently dumped in Somalia and its
disastrous effects for the human health and for the environment as a
whole.
The Tsunami disaster has certainly exacerbated Somalia’s
environmental problems in general and the impact of hazardous waste
in particular. The reality is that very little is known about the
exact magnitude of this multidimensional tragedy and its effects in
terms of environmental degradation, human health and livelihoods’
erosion.
To this end, we will be discussing and commenting on the findings of
literature research carried out by Somali professionals. The
objectives of the event include but not limited to:
- Discuss about what we know
about this criminal phenomenon;
- Explore reasons behind it and
the international context in which it takes place;
- Understand the magnitude of
the problem and its ramification;
- Awareness raising at all
levels (i.e. national and international level);
- Discuss about what can be
done;
- Look at possible strategies
for action;
- Engage the Somali Diaspora.
The World Environmental Day is
commemorated on 5th June every year. For logistical reasons,
this year, we’ll instead celebrate it on Saturday 4th June. The
meeting will take place at the Meeting Centre Hoog Brabant in
the area of Central Station of Utrecht.
